Week 1 Preview and Predictions

After eight long months, CFL football is back and for the next 19 weeks we get to ride the roller coaster that is the regular season, leading up to the 98th Grey Cup in Edmonton. We at CFL Daily Dose are all excited for the season and each week we will break down the games and make our predictions of who will win.

Breakdown:

Chris: Montreal has loads of talent, there’s no questioning that, but they aren’t a young team. They will win the East, and do well in the playoffs, but I don’t see a week one win, especially in Regina where the Riders and their rabid fans will make it very difficult to shake off the rust.

Scott: Montreal is still strong, but after coming so close to winning the ultimate CFL Prize, the Riders will be extra motivated to beat the Als.
Saskatchewan 45-39.

Jonathan: Saskatchewan is great at home. If this game was in Montreal, I may have picked the Alouettes to win. Whatever happens, this should be the game of the week. What a way to start the season!

Breakdown:

Chris: Calgary will challenge in the West, Toronto will challenge in the East… in 2014. Even if the game is close, Calgary will get the win this week.

Scott: Calgary is in midseason form, and taking on a team that may never reach a so called midseason form.
Calgary 38-10.

Jonathan: You would have to be from Toronto to pick the Argonauts to win this week, that is if there are any fans in Toronto…

Breakdown:

Chris: I think Winnipeg is better than they showed last year, but Hamilton will continue to build on the successes of last year.

Scott: The Ti-Cats have really increased their depth and strengthened their O-Line to protect a healthy Kevin Glenn. Buck Pierce gives Winnipeg a much greater chance than previous Quarterbacks(Kevin Glenn excluded), but I don’t think the Bombers will have enough to overpower Hamilton.
Hamilton 31-17.

Jonathan: Pierce will most definetly be injured on his first play of the game, leaving Jyles to run the show. This will go well until Jyles fumbles a quarterback sneak on Hamilton’s one-yard line and Jamall Johnson picks it up and runs for a touchdown.

Sun July 4

Breakdown:

Chris: Game four this week really could go either way, with these two teams likely to end up fighting for third and fourth in the division, the loser of that fight crossing over to the East in the post season. The Eskimos are 4-0-1 in their last five home openers. This week, the Eskimos come out on top.

Scott: A Shootout at Commonwealth last week could see a little bit more of the same. Edmonton’s defense is a little stronger, and Ray a lot more protection than Printers.
Edmonton 35-33.

Jonathan: The fact is, if Edmonton wasn’t hosting the Grey Cup, people wouldn’t be predicting them to finish so high. This is the same team that finished 9-9 last season. In this game, Casey Printers is going to come in and do what he does best, steal a game on the road.

  1. @ Jon

4-0-1 for the Esks in their last five home openers says that the Lions leave Commonwealth with a loss!

  2. Jonathan Hamelin says:

Ha ha will see Gizzie. I think I made four solid picks.

  3. Jonathan Hamelin says:

Need I remind you of week three last season: B.C. 40 at Edmonton 22…

  4. Bahahaha! Poor Jonathan, all alone on that final line. You'll feel bad when BC gets blown out.

  5. Jonathan Hamelin says:

    "2009 CFL Season Week Three: B.C. 40, Edmonton 22"

  6. Jonathan Hamelin says:

Scott: Calgary is in mideseason form? explain.

  7. I touched on that in my weekly column at Esks.com. The Esks lost both of their games at Commonwealth to the Lions last year, but finished off the season with a shellacking at BC Place. Still think that the home opener magic will prevail.

Hmmm, checking the stats, Saskatchewan is 5-0 in their last five home openers. Maybe I shouldn't have picked Montreal. Naw, Montreal is good to break the streak!

  8. @Jonathan – I think the more notable score was Edmonton's 45-13 win over BC in Week 19. Also worth noting is that in Weeks 4 and 5 Edmonton beat BOTH Saskatchewan and Montreal, the eventual Grey Cup runners up and champions.

  9. Jonathan Hamelin says:

The only reason Edmonton beat Montreal was because of their grass stadium.

  10. Scott Fitzsimmons says:

Jonathan… 41-17? I know Riders fans will say "It's only pre-season", butif the Riders are as good as you say they are, even a preseason game should be closer than that. The Stamps moved the ball on the Riders whenever they wanted, and the Riders couldn't. How many teams can say they only punted twice in the first 3 quarters of a pre-season game? I hate going to preseason games, because it's so anti-climactic. Dropped passes, timing penalties make the game go sooooo slowly, and I'm not just talking about the backups. I was at the Calgary/Sask game, and they were on! No dropped passes I saw, and very few penalties from the Stamps. It was an awesome game to watch any time of year. It usually takes even a few weeks into the season for teams to get their timing right, and to click that well together.

  11. Jonathan Hamelin says:

    RIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My response to that Scott is Saskatchewan just beat the defending Grey Cup cahmps and Calgary can't even score more than three poitns against Toronto.

  12. Jonathan Hamelin says:

Well, I guess Calgary did score more than three points…

  13. Jonathan Hamelin says:

Well fellow writers, I am feeling pretty good at 3-1.

  14. You're lucky BC had Robertson and McCallum, they won the game for the Lions.

  15. Jonathan Hamelin says:

But Chris, I thought Edmonton would "blow out" B.c.?

    LOL

    Anyway, pretty dull game.

  16. [...] a lack of trust. At CFL Daily Dose, we certainly didn’t have faith in the Bombers. In our Week 1 Previews and Predictions, none of the writers picked Winnipeg to [...]
